Town lifts ban on open burning

Due to humid weather conditions and recent rain events, the Town of Gordonsville is lifting the ban on open burning in the town that has been in effect since June 26, 2024.

While the ban has been lifted, there is still risk of wildfire spread, and the ongoing drought requires that residents continue to exercise caution when burning.

The Town would like to remind residents to exercise caution with anything that ignites or can throw a spark:

  • Do not throw cigarettes or other lit tobacco products onto the landscape. Extinguish and dispose of them properly in an approved disposal container.
  • Secure chains when towing and ensure your vehicle has no dragging parts that can cause a spark.
  • Be careful using lawnmowers and other equipment that can spark against rock.
  • Don’t drive your vehicle into dry grass or brush. The heat from the exhaust pipes can start a fire.

Those with questions should contact County of Orange Fire and EMS at the non-emergency number, (540) 672-7044. As always, those reporting active, uncontrolled fires should call 9-1-1.
